Step out of your comfort zone

By Rhiannon Johnson, Zumba Step instructor at Soul Studio

Step out of your Comfort Zone!

I’ve heard a lot of people say that they’d love to try Zumba Step, but are afraid to for a number of reasons. I want you to know that I totally get the fear! Trying something new always gets my butterflies going, but it’s important to Step out of our comfort zone (get it? “Step” out?) and try something new…. The goal of today’s blog post is to put you at ease, and hopefully get you to come out and try ZStep with me!

Okay friends, it’s time to do some Mythbusting.

  1. Because I have a bad (insert body part here), I can’t do ZStep. False! Did you know that Zumba Step can be done without the step?! If you can go to Zumba class (or dance the night away at your company’s Christmas party for that matter) you can do ZStep. Not only do I show you modifications and progressions, but I also encourage you to listen to your body and do what’s right for you. I’ve got members with a variety of fitness backgrounds, injuries and physical needs, and they all love ZStep and keep coming back!
  2. Using a Step is confusing. False! Practice makes perfect! I’ve had participants that start off not using the Step at all. Again, it’s all about building confidence and the only way you can do that is to Step out of your comfort zone and give it a try. Consistency is also the key, so coming back every week to learn the choreography and perfect your moves is very important.
  3. Zumba is too fast. I won’t be able to do it on a Step. False! That’s where my job as an instructor comes in. I choose my music very carefully and match the tempo of the tunes very closely to my choreography and use of the Step. Cuing is also very important so that you know what move is coming next and where your feet are supposed to go, and I work hard at making those transitions for you as easy as possible.
  4. I’m afraid that I’ll hurt myself using the Step. False! Again, my role as an instructor is to teach you the safe and proper technique. Like how it’s important to not let your feet hang off the step while dancing, and to know that while we can jump up onto the step, we never jump back down. I verbally remind you of proper technique and demonstrate it during class too.

I hope to see you in class very soon. ZStep has become my passion, and I love that we not only get a fun and awesome cardio workout, but that we also get some amazing booty and lower body toning in as well. Take a Step in the right direction and join me Monday’s at 4:30pm!
