A Smoothie for the Soul

By Jaymie Hackman (currently studying nutrition specializing in sports & fitness through the Alive Academy)

Nutrition for me has always been apart of my lifestyle since fueling your body right makes a big impact on your daily life. It is so important to eat nutritious foods to fuel you throughout your day. Whether before or after a gym class I love to energize or replenish with a smoothie. Since there are so many ways to make a smoothie they are easy to customize to your daily needs. Whether you need to repair and replenish after a workout, or fuel your morning before class, smoothies can be a fast and convenient way to meet your body’s daily requirements.
One of my many favorites, this smoothie contains NO dairy, gluten or wheat which makes it suitable for most!  It provides rich nutrient ingredients, is full of antioxidants, rich in vitamin A which is great for healthy skin and vitamin k which supports bone health.  It also is a  great source of omega 3’s, high in density fibers and rich in trace minerals.  It also contains protein which is essential for the building and maintenance of your body’s greatest metabolic asset-your muscles!  I love to use coconut milk in my smoothies for added benefits.  Coconut milk is rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium.  It is also lactose free!  Another option is to use unsweetened Almond Milk which has a lower fat content then Coconut Milk.   This smoothie is nutrient dense and keeps you feeling satisfied, it is a meal on its own.  Give it a go, or make your own creation to sooth your soul…
smoothie ingredients
Ingredients:

3/4 cup Spinach (organic)

1/2 cup Kale (chopped & organic)

1/2 Avocado (make sure you keep the pit in the half you don’t use to keep it from going brown)

1/2 cup Blueberries (frozen)

1/2 cup Pineapple (frozen)

1/2 Banana (I like frozen best)

2 tbsp Hemp Seeds (shelled)

1 cup Coconut Milk or Almond Milk (unsweetened)

Add all of the ingredients from top to bottom into a blender and blend until smooth.
Add water if needed.

Natures Fare Markets has a great selection of Coconut Milk, Organic Produce and Hemp/Flax Seeds.  They are located in Vernon on 30th Ave on Mainstreet in downtown Vernon.
Note:  When creating your own smoothie, try and use 40-50% vegetables & not just use all fruit.  This will help to reduce the sugar content naturally found in fruits.
